Trying to Find a Job
So I'm out of school for the summer and ready to start working so I can afford next semester. It seems pretty easy to find at least some type of job for the summer, right?
Haha, no.
I've applied to several places to get a job, but I've only heard negative responses from them. It isn't because I don't have experience for what I'm applying to, because I do. Some people don't follow up on their word, or situations arise that make them forget about applications.
I get it. It's summer, they're all busy (especially restaurants) and it's hard to keep track of everything.
But the only beef I have with all of this is the inaccuracy and the deception people have.
Two separate times within a week I've had interviews and been told I'd get a phone call within the next day. I got excited and waited for my call. Guess what? They never called. So instead of continuously waiting for them, I called back asking what I needed to do next.
One place told me they were still conducting interviews and would get back to me after they finish. I thought, "Oh, that's fine. It'll probably be another day or so." But for two days I heard nothing from them, so when I was in town, I dropped by to see where they were at in the hiring process. The lady told me they had already hired someone a day or so ago. But they would keep my resume as a just in case.
Wow. That's so considerate.
So after the unprofessional actions of that place, because yes, it is unprofessional not to give a courtesy call to the people you said you would interview to tell them you've hired someone else. It's called common courtesy y'all.
And this place wasn't a restaurant or anything like that, but an actual business. I was a little shocked, to say the least. My mother was angry (I don't blame her), and my dad was shocked at the lack of professionalism by them.
So moved on to the next application and kept going in and checking to see if I could get an interview. Finally, I got an interview at a restaurant. It sounded really promising and I was getting excited again.
When I had the interview, it went really well. The person interviewing me sounded really positive and was already explaining parts of the job to me. When I left, they told me I'd get a call within 3-4 hours to set up a second interview. I was stoked.
But...I never got the call. They never called, so the next day, I decided to call them. Turns out I wasn't on the second interview list or anything like that. Either the person interviewing me lied to my face or the information got lost somewhere. So they told me to call back in a day so they could figure everything out. I told them I would.
Enter this afternoon. Finally 3:15 rolled around so I called them, hoping to hear some good news. When I talked to the man, he apologized and hated to be the bearer of bad news. They hired someone else because it was too much trouble to hire me and then transfer me in the fall when I left for college again.
There it was again.
People always say it's easy for college people to find a job during summer. IT'S NOT. Businesses don't like hiring temporary people, and they only think about their business. Who cares if someone is there three months compared to someone who would be there eight?
It's very difficult to find a job when you know you're going to have to leave. Because if they ask you, you can't lie. So it makes this ongoing circle of trying to find a temporary job that will help you pay for college, and finding an employer who doesn't mind a temporary worker.
But, I'm not giving up. I'm going to keep bothering people and pestering them until I get a job. I'm bound and determined to get one, and not everyone can say no. So there's my rant for the day, and a little FYI for all of y'all out there trying to find a summer job! Hopefully this doesn't discourage you, but maybe you can learn from my mistakes and find a way that works for you in order for you to get a job!
